The former president Threatens Relocation of 2026 World Cup Fixtures from Boston, Olympic Games from LA

Former President Trump has once again declared he would influence FIFA to pull 2026 World Cup matches from a designated city based on that city's governance, with Boston emerging as the most recent targeted location to face such threats from the American leader. Moreover, Trump suggested he would consider similar action against Southern California for the 2028 Olympics due to possible safety issues.

Official Power and Possible Pressure

Although Trump does not have direct legal authority to unilaterally remove either event, he can lobby the international organizations overseeing each competition to change venues.

Setting for Statements

These comments were made during a news conference with Argentina's leader Milei, who was at the presidential residence following the revelation of a massive rescue package for the Argentine nation. At the conclusion of the event, a reporter asked Trump about a recent unauthorized gathering in Boston where authorities were attacked and a patrol car was ignited. The correspondent also asked if the situation could result in the revocation of tournament responsibilities for the larger soccer tournament.

“It's possible to take them away,” the former president remarked about the FIFA World Cup fixtures, set to be staged at Gillette Stadium. “She is ineffective … she is far-left, and they’re occupying parts of downtown. That is a major claim, don't you think?”

Public Gatherings and Public Safety Concerns

Street takeovers, a digitally organized occurrence where large crowds congregate on urban roads after dark to perform stunts, have been a frequent nuisance in metropolitan centers since the lockdown closures. Recent incidents have turned violent in the region, including the city. Nevertheless, these events are typically not seen as tied to any specific ideological group.

“In cases where someone is failing, and I believe there’s security risks, I will call the FIFA head, who is excellent, and tell him it should be shifted to a different city,” the former president stated during the event. “He will do that. He might not prefer doing it, but he would comply. Readily, he would.”

FIFA Relationship

Gianni Infantino has been open his attempts to be closely connected with the former president prior to the 2026 event, scheduled to be organized in multiple US locations across the US along with several in the northern neighbor and a few in the southern neighbor. The organization's leader has participated at multiple presidential events, arranged for Trump hand over the Club World Cup trophy after the championship match, and has even rescheduled his FIFA's internal meeting to join Trump on a journey to the Arab region earlier in 2025.

Previous Threats

Nevertheless, Trump from threatening the cancellation of soccer games from other US host cities. In late September, Seattle and San Francisco came under similar comments, with Trump stating both locations were “led by radical left lunatics who are clueless what they're managing,” while questioning the public safety of both cities and claiming that events could be shifted.

Official Rebuttal

FIFA vice-president Montagliani rebuffed Trump’s assertions when he reacted subsequently at a gathering in London.

“It is FIFA’s tournament, FIFA’s jurisdiction, FIFA makes these matters,” he said. “With all due respect to sitting presidents, soccer is more important than them and the game will survive their tenure and their leadership. That is the strength of this sport, that it is transcends any individual and bigger than individual states.”

During the event, Trump’s answer to a question about Boston included a similar threat regarding the upcoming Summer Games.

“If I believed Los Angeles was not adequately ready, I would move it to a different city as needed,” Trump stated. “On that one I’d probably have to obtain a different kind of approval, but we would proceed.”

Official consent Trump refers to would need to come via the Olympic governing body. The head, she, was selected to her post in March and has yet to meet publicly with Trump, although she said that she would like a meeting with him at some point.

Additional Criticism

The former president also questioned the state's leader Newsom’s management of the blazes, stating that a comparable scenario could lead to the removal of the event.

“When he refuses to cooperate, we are going to have to be firm,” the former president said.

His message was similarly clear for Boston.

“They should improve their situation,” he said. “That is I will say.”
